Bernadette Barkouskie Stone, 76, of Mexia, passed away July 20, 2015 in Palestine, Texas. The service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 24, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Zach Kunnakkattuthara officiating. Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Point Enterprise Cemetery. Visitation with family will be 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Bernadette was born August 25, 1938 in Cotton Gin, Texas to William Stanley Valentine Barkouskie and Frances Agnes Alexander Barkouskie. She was a graduate of Teague High School, class of 1956. She received her bachelors and masters degrees in education from Sam Houston State University. Her first year of teaching was in the Aldine ISD, but gave 29 years of service to the Mexia ISD before retiring. Her teaching career included special education, 4th grade, 5th grade reading and math and Freshman English. After retirement, Bernadette continued working as a substitute teacher, receptionist for Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home, sold insurance, and helped with their orchard and on their farm and ranch. Her passion in life was teaching. She was a life-long learner and happiest when she was taking a class to learn more. She loved writing poetry, reading, and a good cup of coffee. Bernadette was a wife, mother, grandma, friend, teacher, and a devout Catholic. Her faith was extremely important. Bernadette never met a stranger and made friends with most. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth; brothers, Marion Barkouskie and baby James "Bobo" Barkouskie; and sisters, Dorothy Lahrmann and Louise Horn. Bernadette is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, W.N. Stone; son, Rusty Stone and wife, Karen of Palestine; daughter, Monette White and husband, Wade of Teague; extended daughter, Karyl Butler of Wortham; grandchildren, Macy Lauren Stone, Katherine "Katie" Grace Stone, Rachel Elizabeth White, Brolen Alexander White, Chance Quentin White; extended granddaughter, Lauren Allyson York; and great granddaughter, Aubrey Deann White. Pallbearers will be Steve Ferguson, Jered Stone, Jeremy Stone, James Dawley, Sam Mack, Benjie Reed, Bobby Reed and Larry Price. Honorary pallbearers will be Edmund Schuster, Mike Schuster, Dwight Mahoney, John Stubbs, Jr. and John Crundwell. "Be kind to one another. Forgive others. Help the old and the needy.
