Edward Leon Massey, affectionately known to everyone as “Dick”, passed away at his home in Wortham on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 surrounded by his family and friends following a short illness with lung cancer; he was 58 years old. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 27, 2026 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Ronnie Williams, Jeff McCormick, Joe Hannigan, Heath McCoslin, David Robertson, and Todd Jones will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.
Dick was born on May 10, 1967 in Dallas, Texas to Harold Wayne and Avis Beatrice (Price) Massey. He worked several jobs over the years, beginning with his father in the roofing business, a trade that served him well in the years to come. His last employment was working as a building engineer for David Burke at the Santander Towers, formerly known as The Thanksgiving Towers, in Dallas; a job he truly loved.
Dick met and married the love of his life, Rilda Jane “Jan” Sterling on August 18, 1987 and they were blessed with two daughters, Amanda Jo and Avis Mae and later several grandchildren. He dearly loved and was very proud of his daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends regardless of whether they were at the beach or just home drinking and having a great time with everyone.
Dick was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. It didn’t matter if they were winning or losing, he remained true to the Cowboys! He was also a fan of the Dallas Mavericks and the Stars. He liked to play golf, occasionally, participate in shuffleboard tournaments at his favorite place, the Lonestar Bar in Dallas, and especially enjoyed playing poker on Saturday nights at his daughter’s house and taking everyone’s money.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Wayne Massey, Sr. and Avis Beatrice Castillo; brother, Dennis Frank Massey; brother-in-law, Mark Rodriguez; and dear friend, Rick Payne.
Dick is survived by his daughters, Amanda Jo and husband, Kyle Calame and Avis Mae Kimbeni of Wortham; grandchildren, known as “Poppy’s babies, Kynlee, Kasen, Kameron, and Kix Calame, Mattie, Xavier, and Zaylie Kimbeni, and Justyce Thomas-McCaffery all of Wortham; sisters, Tonya Rodriguez of Mexia and Mary Gagich of Grandview; brothers, Harold Massey, Jr. and wife, Hazel of Kentucky and Lonnie Massey and wife, Christy of Bailey, TX; the mother of his children, Jan Massey of Groesbeck; second wife & love, Laura Massey of Richardson; special friends, Dave and wife, Rachel Robertson of Teague; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dick’s family would like to thank Tamara and Cory Cawthorn, Caressa (KiKi) Thomas and Krystal Alvarez for the many times they sat with him and cared for him. Also, very special thanks to all the hospice nurses, and special friend, Valerie Henson of Tehuacana for all your help during this difficult time.
