Gerald Dean Henderson passed away May 16, 2017 in Mexia, Texas at the age of 85. Funeral services will be 2 PM, Friday, May 19, 2017 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Mr. Kent Kendall officiating. Interment will follow Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will begin prior to the service at 1 PM., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel. Gerald was born November 12, 1931 in Lost Prairie, Texas to Lester and Allie Lee Davis Henderson. He attended Mexia schools and graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1950. Gerald proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1951-1955. On March 13, 1955, he married the love of his life, Marie Petery, in New York. Gerald retired from the Dallas Zoo, after 30 years of service as Supervisor of the Primate Department and returned to Mexia. He joined, and became an active member of the Mexia Lions Club. Gerald was very proud of his affiliation with the Lions Club and, in honor of his dedication, became the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. Gerald was well known for his good sense of humor, he was always with a quick joke; he had an outgoing personality that everyone loved. He enjoyed country music and making CD's for his friends of their favorite artists. But most importantly, Gerald loved his family and always made every effort to provide for his needs. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marie Henderson; daughters, Donna Henderson of Mexia and Linda Mackie and husband, Merle Mackie of Germany; grandchildren Megan Mackie, Evan Mackie and Conner Mackie; brother, Lester Ray Henderson and wife, Marinel of Robinson; sisters, Delight Clary of Houston, Pat Jones of The Colony and Dora Jo McCurrin of Waco; and a number of nieces and nephews.
