Harris Glyn (Harry) Hughes died August 17, 2026, at the farm in Kirvin, Texas surrounded by family. He was four days shy of his 101st birthday. Born in 1925, Harry embodied all the values associated with The Greatest Generation. A proud WWII veteran, he served his country with distinction and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star (4).
Harry was a loyal employee of the Dow Chemical company for over 29 years. He had four patents, a result of his hard work and dedication.
He was born in Pisgah Ridge (Navarro County, Texas) on August 21, 1925, to Talmadge and Faye Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sadie Allen Hughes in 1967 and his second wife, Nelwyn Irby Hughes in 2022. Additionally, his brothers Bill and Jack Hughes and sister, Johnnie Johnson.
Harry and Nelwyn were married 53 years. He is survived by their five children, Julia Kolojaco, Vicki Fisher (Don), Jill Brown (Bob), Jack Hughes, Bill Irby (Vicki), 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. He was their hero and biggest fan.
There will be a graveside service to honor him and his military service at Woodland Cemetery, in Kirvin, Texas on October 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. A reception in his honor will be held in the Fellowship Hall at the Kirvin Baptist Church following the service.
