James Hancock

James William Hancock, of Mexia, passed away May 26, 2018 in Waco, Texas at the age of 84. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Shane Norcross officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Forest Glade Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. James was born May 13, 1934 in Franklin, Texas to Albert Robert and Mary Maggie Lockett Hancock. On March 10, 1955, he enlisted in the US Air Force and began his career at Lackland Air Force Base. On December 31, 1977, he retired with over 22 years of service serving his country and traveling to numerous countries. Some of this time included serving in the Vietnam War. Prior to total retirement and moving to Mexia to be near family, he worked in Dallas at Delta Air Lines as a mechanic and in the clean up crew and, also, for Shipping Vineyard Fabrics. James loved serving the Lord, his country and spending time with his family. He was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, as well as other activities. He was an active member of the Men's Prayer Breakfast and, almost always, got there early enough to make the coffee. His leisure time was spent fishing and traveling. James was a life member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, A. R. and Mary Hancock; brothers, Robert Henry, Edward Lee, Roy Jackson and Wendell Lockett Hancock; and sisters, Nellie Francis Smith, Joy Elizabeth Davis and Reba Faye Long. James is survived by his sister, Dorothy Hancock Arnold of Dallas; brother, Malcolm Hancock and wife, Hazel Mae of Victoria; nephew, Paul Barrett and wife, Debra Hayes of Mexia; niece, Deborah Bunn of Coppell; and numerous other nieces and nephews throughout Texas and the West Coast.
