James Dwight McHargue

James “Dwight” McHargue, of Wortham, entered his Heavenly home, with his daughter by his side, on July 17, 2025 at the age of 94. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2025 in the Wortham Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers will be Kaden Perry, Hance Spencer, Gene Allen, Kelly Butler, Danny Bosley, and Butch Kofnovec.

Dwight was born June 17, 1931 in Wortham, Texas to J. S. and Naomi (Calame) McHargue. After graduating from Wortham High School, Dwight entered Sam Houston State University where he received his BSA. He worked in the oil field for numerous years in addition to being a rancher. During his college years he worked as a draftsman. Although some of his professors felt he possessed a talent for painting and tried to encourage him to pursue a career in art, he wasn’t interested.

While serving his country in the US Air Force, Dwight met the love of his life, Luella R. Brunner, at a barn dance in North Carolina. They were married on June 12, 1954 and had 56 wonderful years together at the time of her death in 2011. Dwight and Luella were blessed with one daughter, three grandchildren, and one great grandson. He cherished his family and enjoyed every opportunity he had to spend time with them.

Dwight loved the Lord and exemplified it in the way he lived his life. He enjoyed raising cattle and ranching but loved nothing more than doing the Lord’s work. He was a longtime active member of the Brethren Church in Wortham where he led music, as well as volunteering to help where there was a need. Wherever Dwight went, he was looking for someone to share the word of God. He was truly a devoted Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. S. and Naomi McHargue; wife, Louella McHargue; and sisters, Jacqueline Collier and Bettygene Donnan.

Dwight is survived by his daughter, Paula Perry and husband, Scott of Ft. Worth; grandchildren, Elowyn Perry of Austin, Kaden Perry of Ft. Worth, and Kristina Perry of Ft. Worth; great grandson, Leo Perry; and several nieces and nephews.
