He graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1967, where he excelled in football and became known as “Joe the Toe”. He was raised in a Christian home and was a longtime active member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Joe truly enjoyed singing, especially, gospel songs. In 1999, Joe’s family formed a gospel quartet; he was a founding member, spokesperson, and lead singer of the “Teel Family Singers”. They sang in numerous churches throughout Central and East Texas until the group dissolved in 2009.
Joe had a very outgoing personality, met everyone with a big smile, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed refereeing football games, umpiring baseball games, playing golf, gardening, and riding around checking cows.
He was preceded in death by his parents, C. W. and Barbara Teel.
Joe is survived by his five children, Robert Joseph Teel and wife, Delia, Kyle Lowe Teel, Jennie Johnson and husband, Michael, Debbie Isham and husband, Davy and Wayne Nichols and wife, Donna; 22 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; brothers, Lain Teel and wife, Joanie, Randy Teel and wife, Joan, David Teel and wife, Frankie, and Mike Teel and wife, Lacy; sisters, Marsha Smith, Toni Douglass, and Mary Castillo and husband, Felipe; very special friend and devoted caregiver, Beverly Stepp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
