John was born on September 5, 1935 in Mexia, Texas to William Donald and Georgia (Williams) Stevens. He had lived in the Limestone County area his entire life. He proudly served his country in the US Army. On February 24, 1968, John married the love of his life, Judy Kelley, in Corsicana, Texas. He worked at ABCO Furniture Factory for several years prior to going to work for the Mexia State School where he retired after 27 years of service.
John was a faithful Christian, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was no different than most, his entire family meant the world to him, but his grandchildren were so very special. He was an active member of Faith Baptist Church.
John was known for his kind heart and willingness to help others; he was known to be a “give his shirt off his back” kind of guy. He enjoyed farming and planting a big garden which usually produced enough vegetables to share with others. Whenever time allowed, he also liked to hunt, fish, and play regular dominoes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William D. and Georgia Stephens; and brother, William “Dub” Donald Stephens.
John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judy Stephens of Coolidge TX, son, Timmy Newell of Coolidge, TX; daughter, Teresa Wood of Dew, TX; granddaughter, Harley Ann Wood of Montgomery, TX; grandson, Terry Daniel Wood of Huntsville, TX; niece, Taylor Kelley of Grapevine, TX; and numerous cousins.
