Buckwheat was born August 5, 1936 in Mexia to Grady and Laura Bea Morton. He was a lifelong resident of Mexia. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Buckwheat began his working career at the Mexia Textile Mill and later worked and retired from Mexia Industrial Products. On August 30, 1973, he married the love of his life, Patsy West and they were blessed with a son, Kevin, the light of their life. He now has two beautiful granddaughters that have stolen his heart. Buckwheat's family was not only very precious to him, his love overflowed to many families. Everybody loved "Uncle Buck". Buckwheat never met a stranger, if you ran into him and did not know him, it was just temporary. He enjoyed visiting with anyone. His hobbies consisted of playing dominoes, fishing, going to football and baseball games and coon hunting (in his earlier days). He hosted many domino games, fish fries and family gatherings in his famous "barn" behind his home. Buckwheat's love for kids was never ending, every summer you could find him at the baseball park watching the games, regardless of whose kids were playing. He was one of the biggest Blackcat fans around, he watched them at both practices and games. He was famous for making the "touchdown bells", that he gave to so many. He supported the school and sports during the time Kevin was a participant and even after. Buckwheat was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Finis "Tubby" Morton; brother-in-law, Sonny Henderson; nephew, Jackie Morton; and niece, Wanda Lummus.
