Louis York

Louis H. York, 85, of Mexia, entered into his heavenly home on April 27, 2014. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Rev. Jeff Wright and Rev. Bill Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Louis was born June 28, 1928 in Honest Ridge (near Groesbeck) to Louis D. and Bernie Briggs York. Due to the necessity of helping on the family farm, he was unable to complete his education. He worked at the Mexia Textile Mill and retired from the Mexia State School after 20 years of service at each entity. Louis married Virginia Ruth Hargrave in Mexia on November 15, 1952. Louis enjoyed farming, gardening (in which he took great pride) and playing music with friends. He played the guitar and harmonica and, on occasions, both at the same time. He played for nursing homes until he became too ill to perform. After retirement, he also took great pleasure in doing lawn work for many people. Louis was raised in the country, in a Christian home and remained true to these values. He was a longtime active member and served as a deacon of Northside Baptist Church for many years. He joined the church, as a child, with his parents soon after the church was organized. Louis also enjoyed family and church gatherings, where there was plenty of good food to eat. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, C.D. "Buzz" York; sister-in-law, Linda York; and niece, Theresa York. Louis is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia of Mexia; daughters, Linda Hudson and husband, Don of Corsicana and Mary Lou Ray of Mexia; grandchildren, Sarah Jones and husband, Chris, Melissa Herrmann and husband, Mitch, Jeremy Ray and Christy Webb and husband, Brandon; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Albert N. York of Groesbeck; sister-in-law, Billie York of Groesbeck; and a number of nieces and nephews.
