Mary Carter Slaughter

Mary Carter (Kennedy) Slaughter,84, passed away at her home in Houston, Texas on August 7, 2026. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2026 in Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton, Texas. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Thornton Cemetery.

Mary was born February 6, 1942 in Thornton, Texas to C. C. and Cassie (Jackson) Kennedy. She grew up in Thornton and graduated from Thornton High School, Class of 1960. Mary married Donald Ray Slaughter on July 30, 1960 in Thornton and they were blessed with 49 wonderful years together prior to his death in 2009. Although Houston became her home for 63 years, Thornton always had a place in her heart.

Although Mary worked, and retired from Sears after 32 years of service, taking care of her family was always her first and most important job. She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved family gatherings whether it was during holidays, special occasions or just getting together when time allows.

Mary’s outside interests included collecting numerous things. She enjoyed shopping/thrifting, going out to eat, going with friends to the casinos, and watching her favorite Soap Operas, The Young & Restless and The Bold & Beautiful.

She was preceded in death by her parents, C. C. and Cassie Kennedy; siblings, Lazelle Browning and Shirley Peery.

Mary is survived by her children, David Alan Slaughter, I, DeAndrea Lynnette Grayson and husband, Kenneth, and DeShanna Annette Kirkland; grandchildren, David Alan Slaughter, II, Stephanie Nichole Artzner, Steven Thomas Slaughter, Brittney Nicole McDaniel, Robert Ray Slaughter, Dennis Richard Kirkland, Jr., Brian Anthony Slaughter, and Thomas Aron Kirkland; and 17 great grandchildren.
