Melvin Brown

Harvey Melvin Brown, of Thornton, passed away December 11, 2018 in Bryan, Texas at the age of 74. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Mexia. Interment will follow in the Lost Prairie Cemetery. Randal Brown, Clayton Brown, Stephen Brown, Steve Brown, Tyler Merenda and Colton Tanner Rich will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Melvin was born July 28, 1944 in Personville, Texas to Harley Willie and Rosie Inez Coslin Brown. He graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1962 and later, attended college for two years. He began his working career with General Dynamics in Fort Worth and completed it with Big Brown Mine in Fairfield, retiring after many years of service as a warehouse manager.

Family and serving the Lord were first in Melvin's life. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. He was born and raised a "country boy" and never outgrew his love for the beautiful country God created. Melvin enjoyed growing and canning vegetables from the large garden he planted each year, watching his cattle grow, deer hunting and traveling to look at the wildflowers and roadrunners. In a more relaxing time, he liked to work puzzles and do etchings. He was also, an active member of the Tehuacana Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harley Brown; mother, Rosie Brown Carpenter; step-father, Ira Carpenter; wife, Carol Brown; and two brothers, Kenneth and Curtis Brown.

Melvin is survived by his loving daughters, Charlotte Rene Currie and husband, Philip James of Thornton and Jana Rae Rich and husband, Tron of College Station; grandchildren, Jason Tyler Merenda, Kaylin Elaine Merenda, Kathryn Rene Merenda, Kristen Lynn Merenda, Wendy Jessica Currie, Colton Tanner Rich and Cassidy Taylor Rich; great grandchildren, Kailey Jade and Carter Ray Merenda; sister, Lois Amick and husband, Andy of Jefferson; first wife and mother of his children, Ann Brown of Lake Limestone; and a number nieces and nephews.

Memorials be made to the Tehuacana Baptist Youth Group or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.
