Shirley Nell Yarbrough passed away July 5, 2019 in Mexia at the age of 83. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the Lost Prairie Cemetery with Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating. She will be in state on Monday from noon until 7:00 p.m.
Shirley was born July 22, 1935 in Donie, Texas to Monroe and Callie Seay Little, their only child. She grew up in Donie, attended Donie schools and was a graduate of Teague High School, Class of 1953. At the age of 18, Shirley began a career in banking with the Donie Bank from January 1953 thru June 1953, then worked at the First National Bank in Mexia (now, Incommons Bank) from 1953 thru l984 and, lastly, completed her 34 years of banking in Wortham from l985 thru 1987. She also worked for the City of Mexia, where she retired in 1993.
Working at the bank was the perfect job for Shirley, as she thoroughly enjoyed being among people, helping customers, seeing old friends and making new ones. She loved playing cards and dominoes with friends and loved drinking her coffee. In her early years, she enjoyed going to musicals with friends. Shirley was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Mexia.
On November 10, 1990, she married the love of her life, Gerald Yarbrough who preceded her in death on June 23, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents and many friends.
Shirley is survived by her adopted daughter, Clarissa Ward and husband, Bobby of Mexia; cousins, Fairy Parish of Ft. Worth, Don Turner of Donie, Linda Woodward of New Braunfels, Jennifer Seay of New Braunfels; nieces, Karen Harrison and husband, Walt and daughter Lucy Kate of Mexia and Christine Brunson and husband, Jason and daughter, Emma; very special friend of 80 years, Faye Higgins of Donie; longtime friend, Pat Farren of Alabama; friends, "Red" Jackson of Mexia, Ann Talley of Mexia, Donna Arnold and husband, Ron and son, Logan of Donie, Dale Brown of Mexia, Barry Brown of Mexia, Maria Acevedo of Coolidge, Sue Furlow of Mexia and Eduardo Orihuela of College Station; and special caregivers, Sophia Ozaeta, Samantha Salazar, Johana Jones, Judy Washington, Carol Sours and Tesiah Sours.
