Funeral services for Vernon Evans Rhodes, 94, former Mexia resident were held on Monday, July 3, 2006 in Blair - Stubbs Chapel, Mexia. Rev. Marcus Sheffield Pastor of First Baptist Church in Mexia officiated, with interment following in the Lost Prairie Cemetery. Mr. Rhodes was born on May 18, 1912 in Jewett to William B. and Amanda Jones Rhodes and passed away on July 1, 2006 in Tomball Regional Hospital. He was a salesman for Rainbo Bakery for 38 years and a longtime farmer. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mexia. He loved baseball and played semi-pro ball in Houston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Rhodes in 2003 (after having been married for 68 years) and 5 brothers and 4 sisters.. He is survived by his son: Marvis Dale (Dusty) Rhodes and wife, Jeanette of Simonton, Texas, Grandchildren: Marci Marie Boyd and husband, Alan R. Boyd of Magnolia, and Bobby Dale Rhodes and wife, Delisa of Duncanville; great grandchildren, Justin, Michael, Brandon, Afton and Mason. Pallbearers were Dave Chilcoat, Ricky Price, Justin McClung, Alan Boyd and Mark Russell.
