William Oscar "Bill" Hughes, Jr. passed away December 15, 2018 at his home in Mexia at the age of 65. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mexia with Branch President Don Ellestad officiating. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska, at a later date.
Bill was born June 28, 1953 in Hebron, Nebraska to William Oscar, Sr. and Margaret Phyllis Sykes Hughes. He served his country for 11 years, enlisting in the US Marines in 1971 and then serving in the Michigan National Guard. Bill was a LAN Engineer for K-Mart International Headquarters in Troy Michigan for 23 years, prior to retirement.
Bill loved America, Eagles, Bison and Freedom. He had a quick wit. He believed in the U.S. Constitution. Bill kept busy in numerous organizations; he had various leadership roles in the Boy Scouts of America, Dale Carnegie, and as a volunteer of Paint the Town & Detroit Thanksgiving Parade. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he also served in a number of leadership roles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Maranatha Hughes and brother, Michael Hughes.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Hughes of Mexia; son, Michael Hughes and wife, Anne and their son, Bennett Hughes of Macomb, MI; son William Christopher Hughes; and sisters, Linda Acker and husband, Ken of Omaha, NE, Suzanne Mann and husband, Dave of Freedom, CA and Debbie McDowell and husband, TJ of Lincoln, NE.
