William Scott Thornton passed away peacefully at the age of 61 in Mexia, Texas. Services will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 3:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Mexia, Texas. Visitation will be on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Mexia, Texas. Interment will be at Point Enterprise Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers are Macon Thornton, Lanky Moore, Willie Herring, Shane Threat, Randy Grimes, and Kenneth Hall. Honorary Pallbearers are Rodney Armstrong, Michael Gann and Peter Sinclair.
Scott was born to William Merle and Linda Ann (Morris) Thornton on July 21, 1964, in Dallas, Texas. Scott graduated from Mexia High School in 1982, attended college briefly and then moved to Houston to work for his uncle and more importantly, pursue his music, which was the love of his life.
After moving back to the Mexia area, Scott formed his band, “Diamondback TX” with his brother and best friend, Bryan “BT” Thornton along with other notable friends. Diamondback TX performed, drank in, and tore up most every honky tonk, beer joint, and music venue across Texas, eventually making their way around the globe. Scott was an amazing songwriter and wrote many while going up and down the highways over the years. The band featured many musicians throughout its 37-year run, with Scott being the last active original member. Diamondback TX notably backed Country Music legend, Billy Joe Shaver for many years, taking the boys from Point Enterprise all over the world. Playing The Grand Old Opry was an achievement Scott was extremely proud of.
Scott Thornton will be remembered by all who were blessed with knowing and loving him. Just like the songs he leaves behind him, he’s going to live forever.
Scott is survived by his only son, Macon Thornton. Special soul mate Amber Sinclair. Mother Linda Thornton, Sister Leslie DeCoux and husband Bill. Stepson Peter Sinclair and wife McKenna and Stepdaughter Katie Hancock. Grandchildren Sedona and Thomas Sinclair. Aunts Janice Fisher, Betty Tand and husband Kenneth, Bonnie Mayeur and husband RL, and Carolyn Henry. Uncles Jerry Morris, Mike Morris and wife Sherry. Nieces Alyssa Butler and Elizabeth Warren and husband Walter. Nephews Tyler Thornton and Austin Thornton. Great Aunt Pam Ingram. Scott also leaves behind many cousins, and hundreds of friends who knew and loved him well.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Merle Thornton and his brother and best friend, Bryan “BT” Thornton. Grandparents Macon and Emma Thornton, Herbert and Loretta Morris; Aunt Suzanne Thomas and Uncles Phillip Morris and Dan Morris.
