Vera Kerr

Vera Kerr, formerly of Mexia, passed away in Plano, Texas on December 31, 2020, at the age of 92. There will be a private family graveside service.

Vera Kerr was born in Madison County on October 19, 1928 to David Samuel and Mattie Anna Cobb Morgan.  She graduated from Madisonville High School.  Vera married her lifelong partner, Morris Dean Kerr on January 26, 1951.  She worked for Southwestern Bell as a switchboard operator for 15 years.  She, also, worked for Casual Fashions as a seamstress doing alterations and as a salesperson for many years.

Vera enjoyed spending her time sewing, playing games, (especially cards and dominoes). She loved fishing with Morris and having friends over for fish fries.  She was an amazing cook and her grandsons and their families always looked forward to Grandma’s home cooked meals. She also loved making beautiful Christmas stockings for family and friends that will be treasured keepsakes.

Vera sometimes had to move the household, on a moment’s notice, when Morris was moved to a new location for work.  Of all the places they lived, Mexia was her favorite and the place they built their dream home. She was a member of Forest Glade Baptist Church where she always carried delicious food for their potluck meals.

Vera was a stay-at home mom, for several years, and a volunteer at her children’s school. She joined several bowling leagues, when Mexia had a bowling alley, and accumulated many trophies. She loved the many years when she and Morris were able to travel in their motor home and treasured all the friendships of their traveling companions. Vera was excited to try square dancing and Morris reluctantly agreed. Once they learned, they were hooked and soon started teaching others. Being such a talented seamstress, she made many of the costumes for the dancers. They made lifelong friends with the group of square dancers from Fairfield called, The Barnstompers. In the last few years, Vera and Morris moved to the DFW area to be closer to family, but she still stayed in touch with their close friends from Mexia and Fairfield. Vera never met a stranger and would engage anyone in conversation. She loved her family and friends and will be missed by those who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Mattie Morgan; her husband of almost 70 years, Morris Dean Kerr; son, Richard Morris Kerr; brothers, Raymond Morgan, Brent Morgan and Sam Morgan; sisters, Mary Ethel Lambert, Sadie Blagrave and Davie Jean Reed.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Deborah Prowell and husband, Mark of Oak Point, TX; grandsons, Josh Prowell and wife, Trista and their daughter, Kaitlyn of The Colony, TX and Aaron Prowell and his wife, Kathleen and their children, Meg, Owen and Jack of Corinth, TX; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
